How Character Information Shapes a Jubensha Session

See how different character perspectives create reasons to talk, interpret events and make choices within a shared Jubensha story.

Jubensha can give participants different perspectives on the same story. A character’s knowledge, relationships and objectives can create a reason to speak, withhold information or reconsider an event. The individual work defines how that information may be used.

A perspective is more than a clue

Character material can explain why an event matters to someone. A relationship or memory may affect how a participant interprets a conversation, even in a work that is not built around solving a crime.

    Give the conversation a purpose

For creators, ask what each participant can contribute and what they might need from someone else. Information should support meaningful interaction. A secret that cannot be understood or used may leave a player outside the conversation.

Respect the boundaries of the work

Players need to know when material is private, when it can be shared and how new information is delivered. The host follows the work’s guidance rather than treating every uncertainty as permission to change a clue or reveal an ending.

    Check what players understood

After a playtest, ask participants how they understood their characters and which interactions mattered. Use those observations to distinguish an engaging uncertainty from an unclear instruction or missing motivation.
