How Long Should You Reserve for a Mystery Game?
Use the chosen work’s duration and hosting guidance to plan setup, reading, play and any closing discussion for your group.

Reserve the time specified for the chosen work, then confirm what that estimate includes with the organiser. There is no single duration that fits every mystery game or Jubensha. Player count, reading load, rules and facilitation can all affect the arrangement.
Check what the estimate covers
Ask whether setup, character assignment, instructions, breaks and the debrief are included. Distinguish the expected playing time from the total period participants should keep available.
Choose a work that fits the time you have
If the group has a fixed departure time, select a suitable work before the gathering. Cutting chapters or skipping a role may change information dependencies and the story itself. Follow the work’s guidance rather than compressing it by guesswork.
Plan participation and breaks
Confirm arrival time and the expectation of staying through the session. Each character may affect other participants’ experience. Agree with the organiser on breaks and what to do if someone unexpectedly needs to leave.
For creators: test the estimate
Record how long players spend reading, understanding instructions and discussing each stage in an actual playtest. Note pauses caused by unclear material separately from intended play. Revise the work and estimate using that evidence.
Check published work introductions and use the playtest guide when preparing your own story.
