Choosing an Online Mystery Game: Questions to Ask

Check hosting, communication, role information, timing and reconnection before committing your group to an online mystery.

Before choosing an online mystery, find out what the players and organiser actually need to do. A digital library, a video call and a browser game can support different parts of the experience; the title’s instructions determine the complete setup.

Does the format fit your group?

Check player count, language, duration and the expected style of participation. Ask whether everyone needs to join at the same time and stay for the full session. Do not assume that online means asynchronous or short.

    Who manages the flow?

Confirm whether a human Game Master is required and which stages the software handles. Identify where players communicate, receive information and make choices. A hostless game is a feature of a particular work, not a property of every online mystery.

    How is private information handled?

Check which account and device each participant should use, how roles are assigned and when reading material becomes available. Follow the work’s rules on screenshots, private discussion and sharing.

    What happens after an interruption?

Confirm how to return to the same session and contact the organiser. Keep the original invitation and account available. If access or payment is unclear, check that state before creating another room or repeating a payment.
